They Share a Birthday – And Now, David Bowie and Elvis Presley Share a Festival This Weekend
This Saturday, Houston-based independent record label Splice Records will present the 11th Annual BowiElvis Fest, which honors the January 8 birthdays of David Bowie and Elvis, two of the most beloved and influential artists of the previous century. Don’t miss what promises to be a memorable event on January 11th!
David Bowie was an English rock star known for dramatic musical transformations, including his character Ziggy Stardust. His first hit was the song "Space Oddity" in 1969. He later co-wrote "Fame" with Carlos Alomar and John Lennon, which became his first American No. 1 single in 1975. An accomplished actor, Bowie starred in The Man Who Fell to Earth in 1976. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Shortly after releasing his final album, Blackstar, Bowie passed away due to cancer on January 10, 2016.
Born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis Presley came from very humble beginnings and grew up to become one of the biggest names in rock 'n' roll. By the mid-1950s, he appeared on the radio, television and the silver screen. Presley scored his first No. 1 single with "Heartbreak Hotel," as well as his first No. 1 album, Elvis Presley, and signing a movie contract with Paramount Pictures—all in 1956. On August 16, 1977, at age 42, he passed away due to heart failure. Since his passing, Presley has remained one of the world's most popular music icons.
BowiElvis Fest will feature eight bands on two stages, more live entertainment, an outdoor party hosted by DJ Chaney and commentary by Master of Ceremonies Mills McCoin. The event will also feature face painting, Elvis/Bowie-themed games, a costume contest, prizes, food concessions provided by chef Lindsey Fuquen with Kitch Catering and numerous nostalgic moments. Sponsors include Lone Star Beer.
